How to read a Korean skincare ingredient list

An ingredient list is the one part of a product page you can check yourself. Here is what it tells you and what it doesn’t, with real examples from the lists we read on 6 October 2026 on each brand’s own page.

The rule

Canada’s Cosmetic Regulations say ingredients are listed in descending order of predominance by weight. Ingredients at a concentration of 1% or less, and all colouring agents, may be listed in random order after the rest. Fragrance may be shown as “parfum” at the end of the list (Cosmetic Regulations, section 21.4).

So:

  • The top of the list is reliable. The first few ingredients are the bulk of the product. In our data they are usually water, a plant water or filtrate, and glycols.
  • The bottom is not ranked. Once an ingredient is at or under 1%, its position says nothing about how much of it there is. A “4th of 30” is meaningful. A “28th of 34” is not.
  • Nothing on the label gives a percentage. That’s why we show positions and never invent amounts.

What our data shows

We have official lists for 16 non-sunscreen Korean products. A few patterns:

  • Water first in 9 of 16. The others include the Anua toner (plant water, then water), COSRX’s snail essence (snail filtrate, no water listed) and an oil cleanser.
  • List length varies a lot. SKIN1004’s Centella Ampoule and Mixsoon’s Bean Essence list 7 ingredients each. Medicube’s Collagen Jelly Cream lists 48.
  • Fragrance isn’t always last. Medicube lists Fragrance(Parfum) 48th of 48. Anua’s Heartleaf Cleansing Oil lists Fragrance 6th of 22, and Laneige’s Lip Sleeping Mask lists it 16th of 34.
  • Order can look odd. COSRX’s page for the Snail 92 cream lists Water 21st of 21, which isn’t what you would expect for a cream. Laneige’s lip mask lists Water 28th of 34. We can’t explain either from the label alone, so treat brand-page lists as a guide and check the box you receive.

Reading a list in practice

  1. Look at the first five. That is most of the product. A toner that opens with water and glycols is a toner. One that opens with oils is an oil.

  2. Find the ingredient you care about, and note the position. Our ingredient pages do this for you. For example, niacinamide is 4th of 10 in COSRX’s BHA liquid and 9th of 48 in Medicube’s cream.

  3. Treat the long tail with caution. Past the 1% line, the order tells you nothing about how much of each ingredient there is.

  4. Check for fragrance if your skin is reactive. It may be at the end of the list, so look for “parfum” or “fragrance” anywhere.

Ingredient lists don’t tell you if something will suit your skin. For that, add one product at a time, and ask a pharmacist or dermatologist about any condition.

Questions people ask

Are skincare ingredients listed by concentration?

Mostly. Canada's Cosmetic Regulations require descending order by weight, but ingredients at a concentration of 1% or less, and all colouring agents, may be listed in any order after the rest.

Where does fragrance go on an ingredient list?

Canadian rules allow "parfum" to be placed at the end of the list. Medicube's Collagen Jelly Cream lists Fragrance(Parfum) 48th of 48. Anua's Heartleaf Cleansing Oil lists Fragrance 6th of 22 on the brand's page.

Does a long ingredient list mean a better product?

No. Lists in our data run from 7 ingredients (SKIN1004 Centella Ampoule) to 48 (Medicube Collagen Jelly Cream). Length says nothing about whether it suits your skin.
