Korean skincare routine order, step by step

Korean routines look long because they split one job into several light layers. The order is simple, and the ingredient lists of the products we track show the logic behind it. We read each list from the brand’s own product page on 6 October 2026.

The order, with examples we track

The convention is thinnest to thickest, so a watery layer can sink in before an oil-rich one sits on top. It is a common convention, not a result from a single study.

Step What it is Product we track What its ingredient list shows
1. Oil cleanser (evening, if you wore sunscreen or makeup) Removes oil-based residue Anua Heartleaf Pore Control Cleansing Oil No water at the top: it opens with Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Sorbeth-30 Tetraoleate, Sorbitan Sesquioleate and Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride (22 ingredients)
2. Water-based cleanser Washes off the rest COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser Water first, then Cocamidopropyl Betaine and Sodium Lauroyl Methyl Isethionate, which are the cleansing agents (25 ingredients)
3. Toner A light, watery first layer Anua Heartleaf 77 Soothing Toner, Round Lab 1025 Dokdo Toner Anua opens with Houttuynia Cordata water, then water. Round Lab opens with water, butylene glycol and glycerin
4. Essence or serum Targeted or hydrating layer COSRX Snail 96 Mucin Essence, SKIN1004 Centella Ampoule Snail filtrate first (12 ingredients). SKIN1004 is water, glycerin and butylene glycol, then centella (7 ingredients)
5. Moisturizer Seals the layers in Medicube Collagen Jelly Cream, Beauty of Joseon Dynasty Cream Both start with water. Medicube is a gel cream with its oils far down the list. Dynasty puts Hydrogenated Polydecene third and Squalane sixth, so it is the richer of the two
6. Sunscreen (morning) Last step by day See our sunscreen guide In Canada, look for a DIN or NPN on the label

Ingredients are listed from most to least, so an earlier position usually means more of it. The order is only a rough guide. Each list is on the brand’s page, linked from the brand and product pages.

Three patterns stand out:

  • Cleansers split by what they remove. The oil cleanser is nearly all oils and emollients, so it dissolves sunscreen and sebum. The gel cleanser is water plus surfactants, so it rinses clean. That is why oil goes first.
  • Every toner and essence we track starts with water or a water-like filtrate. None of them opens with an oil. They are the thinnest layers and belong early.
  • Creams are where the oils sit. The richer the cream, the higher its oils appear, which is the reason they go last.

A 4-step routine, priced

You don’t need all six steps. Here is a basic evening routine of four products, each from the table above: a gel cleanser, a toner, a snail essence and a gel cream. We priced it at every store that had all four in stock in October 2026.

Shelf prices from the October 2026 Price Index, before shipping and tax. Only retailers that had every item in stock are shown. "Free shipping?" compares the total with each store's own minimum.

Shipping minimums decide the real cost, so check the free-shipping column before choosing. Our buying guide compares every retailer, and the Price Index has the price of each product on its own. Sunscreen isn’t in this basket because Canada regulates it as a drug, and we don’t link to buy it.

What you can skip

If your skin is comfortable, a cleanser, a moisturizer and a morning sunscreen are enough. Toner, essence and serum are optional layers, and an oil cleanser is only needed if you wear sunscreen or makeup. This is our view, not a medical recommendation. Add one product at a time and give it a couple of weeks, so you can tell which step is helping. If you have a skin condition, a pharmacist or dermatologist can advise you. If you’re unsure what separates an essence from a serum or an ampoule, our label comparison checks the names against six ingredient lists. Whether a toner earns its place is the subject of do you need a toner.

Questions people ask

What order do you apply Korean skincare?

Cleanser, toner, essence or serum, moisturizer, then sunscreen in the morning. At night, an oil cleanser comes before the water-based one if you wore sunscreen or makeup. The rule of thumb is thinnest to thickest.

Does toner go before essence?

Usually yes. Toners such as Anua Heartleaf 77 and Round Lab Dokdo list water first, which makes them the thinnest layer. An essence follows, then a moisturizer.

Do I need all ten steps?

No. A cleanser, a moisturizer and, in the morning, a sunscreen cover the basics. Add one step at a time, so you can tell what each product does for your skin.

Where does sunscreen go in a Korean routine?

Last in the morning, after moisturizer. In Canada, look for a DIN or NPN on the label, because sunscreen is regulated here as a drug or natural health product.
