Snail mucin: before or after moisturizer?

The short answer is before. A snail mucin essence is a thin, slightly slippery layer, and it goes on after toner and before your moisturizer. The reason is in the ingredient list, which we read from COSRX’s own product pages on 6 October 2026.

What is actually in each bottle

COSRX sells two snail products that people mix up: the Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence (100 ml) and the Advanced Snail 92 All In One Cream (100 ml). Their lists share a start and then split.

Sources: COSRX essence ingredient list and COSRX cream ingredient list, read 6 October 2026. Ingredients are listed from most to least, so an earlier position usually means more of it. The order is only a rough guide, and brands can change a formula, so check the box you receive.

Two things stand out:

• The essence has nothing that seals. Past the filtrate, it is mostly water-binding ingredients (betaine, butylene glycol, sodium hyaluronate), skin-conditioning ones (allantoin, panthenol) and thickeners. None of the 12 is an oil, wax or fatty alcohol, so nothing in it is there to hold moisture in.
• The cream does have emollients, high up. Caprylic/capric triglyceride is third and cetearyl alcohol seventh. That is the job of a moisturizer, which is why the cream is the last step and not a layer to put things on top of.

Both lists open with snail secretion filtrate, so the cream is not a different active. It is the same filtrate in a richer base.

Where each one goes

The usual order for layering skincare is thinnest to thickest. It is a convention, not a rule from a study, and the reasoning is that a water-like layer goes on more easily before an oil-rich one than after it.

1. Toner (a water-first formula: Anua Heartleaf 77 lists plant water and water before anything else).
2. Snail 96 essence, a few drops pressed in while skin is still slightly damp.
3. A moisturizer. This can be the COSRX Snail 92 cream, or any cream you already like.
4. Sunscreen in the morning. In Canada, check for a DIN or NPN on the label, as our sunscreen guide explains.

If you only use the cream, skip the essence and use the cream as step 3. If you only have the essence and you have dry skin, add a moisturizer on top. The essence alone won’t hold the water in.

What they cost in Canada

In our October 2026 Price Index (checked 5 October), the essence was C$15.09 at Stylevana (about C$0.15 per ml) and the cream was C$16.09 at the same store (about C$0.16 per ml). Stylevana ships from Hong Kong. The table shows every retailer that stocked both in October, with the date each price was checked.

Stylevana was the cheapest store for both. The cream is only about a dollar more than the essence there, so if you want one snail product and a moisturizer in one jar, the cream is the better value. What snail mucin won’t do
