Is double cleansing necessary? What the labels show
Double cleansing is a Korean-skincare habit: an oil-based cleanser first, then a water-based one. Whether you need it depends on what’s on your skin. The ingredient lists, which we read from each brand’s own page on 6 October 2026, show what each step is for.
What each cleanser contains
| Anua Heartleaf Pore Control Cleansing Oil | COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser | |
|---|---|---|
| Ingredients listed | 22 | 25 |
| First four | Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Sorbeth-30 Tetraoleate, Sorbitan Sesquioleate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride | Water, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium Lauroyl Methyl Isethionate, Sodium Chloride |
| Water | Not listed | 1st |
| What the top ingredients do | Oils, esters and an emulsifier | Water plus cleansing agents (surfactants) |
| Fragrance | 6th | Not listed |
Sources, each read on 6 October 2026:
- The oil cleanser, from Anua’s product page
- The gel cleanser, from COSRX’s product page
Ingredients are listed from most to least, so an earlier position usually means more of it. Under 1%, the order isn’t ranked (see how to read an ingredient list).
The logic is the same one behind the routine order: oils dissolve oils, and surfactants wash away what the oil loosened. This is the rationale from brand and retailer guides. We found no controlled study showing that double cleansing improves skin.
When it makes sense
- You wore sunscreen or makeup. This is the case the oil step is for. If your sunscreen is a Canadian one with a DIN or NPN, see our sunscreen hub.
- You wore neither. A single gentle cleanse is a reasonable choice, and it costs less.
- Your skin is dry or irritated. Two cleansing steps mean more washing. Drop to one and see a pharmacist or dermatologist if it persists. This is our view, not medical advice.
If you do double cleanse, the oil goes first, on dry skin, then the water-based cleanser. For the rest of the sequence, see routine order.

Questions people ask
Is double cleansing necessary?
Not for everyone. The idea is that an oil cleanser lifts oil-based residue such as sunscreen and makeup and a water-based cleanser rinses the rest. On days with neither, one gentle cleanse is a reasonable choice. We found guidance for this in brand and retailer guides, not in a controlled study.
What is in an oil cleanser?
Anua's Heartleaf Pore Control Cleansing Oil opens with Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Sorbeth-30 Tetraoleate, Sorbitan Sesquioleate and Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, and has no water at all. The emulsifier lets it rinse off.
Can I double cleanse with Korean sunscreen?
Yes, if you wear sunscreen. But in Canada, sunscreen needs a DIN or NPN to be sold, and many Korean ones don't have one. See our sunscreen guide.
